This internship turned out to be a time in my life that I will never forget.
I was able to get my work on the cover twice, with another one in the works. Most people never get an opportunity like that.
I also was exposed to many different aspects of the the magazine world. I learned a lot about networking and planning events. I also had great exposure to planning large photo shoots. It was interesting working with a make-up artist, hair stylist, models, clothing distributors and also a creative director. It is information that I find invaluable.
Overall, I am very happy with the way my internship played out. I am anxious to see where the next chapter of my photography life is going to take me.

Week 8
Monday 16th 1-7, 6 hrs
We had our weekly meeting, then went to lunch with other employees. We also went to a local contact of Torren's so they could discuss an event that is coming up in the future.
Sunday 22nd, 2:30-8pm, 5hr 30min
Today was the swimsuit fashion show for David magazine. It was at a club called Opera. The day was very interesting and informative.
I learned a lot about how to organize models and the clothing that they would wear and also about the layout of a fashion show. The models overall did really good and embraced the fashion show. The crowd was a little disappointing. However, there were not many people there.
Skills:
This week I learned a great deal of event planning and about a fashion show. I know this was on a small scale, but I think it was a good introduction to what the bigger events could be like. I also learned that marketing an event is key. If you do not plan it all out, then sometimes the turnout is going to be not what you expect.

Internship Weekly Report Week 7
5-8 thru-5-15-2011
Hours Worked 7hrs
Saturday 5-14-11, 5:30-11 pm, 5 hrs 30min
Tonight we went to the HRC dinner. I was to cover the event by taking pictures of the speakers and attendees. When we first arrived we were told to go into a room to wait to take pictures of the main award recipient that night, Monique.
It was interesting to be in a room with other media and trying to find a place to take pictures. When she finally arrived she was only in the room maybe 15 minutes before she went on to the dinner.
After taking pictures of Monique I went into the venue and took pictures of the speakers and award recipients at the dinner. I also took pictures of attendees of the event.
Sunday 2-3:30pm, 1hr 30 min
Today I edited pictures for David magazine of the HRC event.
Skills:
Overall, it was good to be exposed to that type of environment. It was very different for environment for me. I had to adapt to the situation and how to act and shoot pictures in that type of environment.

Week 6
Weekly Report 6
5/1-5/9/2011, Total Hours 50hrs 45min
Sunday 1st, 8am-8pm, 12hrs
Today we shot 7 models and many bathing suits. We went all around Atlanta and put the models on the streets. It was a learning experience for me because it was my first big shoot with models, hair, and makeup artist.
It was very important to stay tuned into what the models, fashion designer, and creative director wanted and did not want.
We shot a lot in direct, harsh sunlight. So it proved to be a challenge. The shoot was a lot about adapting to what the director wants and also trying to not compromise your own vision.
It was a long day overall.
Monday 2nd, 1pm-9:15pm, 8hr 15min
Today we had the weekly meeting. We also went through and selected photos from the Swimsuit shoot.
Wednesday 3rd, 3-4pm, 7pm-2am, 8hrs
Edited images in Photoshop and Lightroom for the swimsuit issue.
Thursday 4th, 11a-4pm, 5hrs
Edited pictures from the swimsuit shoot.
Friday 5th, 10am-12:30am, 14hrs 30min
Meeting at the office. Went to meet a group of actors who purchased the cover for the July 4th issue. Printed and laid out the final pictures for the swimsuit issue.
The final images for the pages, cover and index page were selected. Edited more images. Also, typed the information for each image which included all of the designers clothes and prices.
Saturday 6th, 1-2:30pm, 5-6:30pm, 3hrs
Finished up editing the final images. Created the final page with graphics and added text to it.
Skills this week.
I learned a great deal about how to work on a project with many models and leaders involved. There was a lot of planning and details that go into a high volume shoot.
Also, got great insight into deadlines and the pressure they can bring.

Week 4
Week 4 Weekly Report - April 17-24, 2011
Total hrs: 13hrs 30min
Sunday 17th, 2-3:30pm , 1hr 30min
Today I went to the Mono Homo event to set up the media wall for David. I went around the event asking individuals to take pictures. It was outside at Friends bar off Ponce in Atlanta.
Monday 18th- 12pm- 9pm, 8hrs
We had our weekly meeting outside today. We went to a local restaurant and sat outside to discuss the issues and magazine layout. After the meeting was over Torren and I discussed further issues related to the magazine.
Around 5pm we went to a location to shoot a model. We got there early and scouted it out until the model showed up. I then shoot him, with Jeremy’s help, until the sun was gone.
Saturday 23rd 3-7pm , 4hrs
Today I came in to meet with Torren. We drove around to meet with Brian for a minute. We then went to Starbucks and had a meeting about the Swimsuit issue. We also meet with Brian about doing make-up for the models.
Skills:
One thing that keeps repeating itself it how important it is to network and try to keep an ongoing report with business owners and individuals. In this network there seems to be many people that have their hands in a lot of pots. You need to find the right way to mingle and make contacts while still be professional.

21hrs 30min
Sunday 10th, 12-5pm, 5hrs.
Edited pictures from the cover shoot and the Melissa Carter event from the day before.
Monday 11th 10:30-10pm. 11hrs 30min
We meet for the weekly meeting today and discussed events and issues for the weekly magazine.
After the meeting, Torren and I went over the final images for the Cover pictures and seen at’s for local bars.
I also put out a casting call for local models and tried to find models for the swimsuit shoot.
In the afternoon, Torren and I went to different locations around town that were possible locations for David events. I went with him while he was networking and checking up on leads.
We then went back to the office to pick up magazines for the outing at Blake’s. Once at Blake’s I had to take pictures for the seen at’s. Torren and I also meet an individual who we thought would be good for modeling in the swimsuit issue. Torren and he exchanged contact information to set up an interview.
Friday 15th 10am-2pm, 8-9pm, 5 hrs
Today I was at the office to interview possible models for the swimsuit shoot at David. We had two models show up who were interested. Torren had them fill out paper work. We gave them numbers and I took model shoots of them.
Later Torren and I discussed and planned out ideas for the swimsuit shoot and possible locations.
Skills Learned: This week I learned a lot about networking. Torren and I went and meet up with possible leads face to face. I noticed how important it was to have the face-to-face interaction with clients.
I also learned that trade could be a very helpful resource when you may need locations, models or skills from other people.

Week 2
Monday April 3rd: Noon till 10pm. 10 hrs
Today was the weekly meeting. The employees that were there was Jesse, Steve, Torren, Carson and myself. The topics that were discussed were about upcoming events, issues that needed to be corrected and upcoming photo shoots.
After the meeting, Torren had me work on “seen at photos” from various events from the week before. Torren went through photos taken and selected images that would be put into the magazine. He also looked at the images I had taken of Paul Appleman and he selected the ones for me to edit and put in the magazine. I also had to take and edit a picture of myself for a press pass.
Within the time I was at the office I edited pictures. We were also informed of a sudden change in the Easter issue cover and I had to make some calls about cancelling the original idea and scheduling the new one. Torren and I also planned out the week and the events we had to attend. I was at the office until around 8:30pm.
After the office we had to go to Blake’s On The Park to take seen at photos and set up the David table and magazine. We were there until around 10pm.
Wednesday April 5th: 1pm – 4pm, 3 hrs
Today we had to scout out a location for the Easter photo shoot on Sunday. Torren and I went scouting out locations at local High Schools. I also had to look for models for the upcoming swimsuit issue photo shoot.
Saturday April 9th: 3pm – 7pm, 8:30 pm-1:30am, 8hrs 30min
This afternoon we had the Easter photo shoot for David magazine. We went to a local high school and shot a drag queen group. I was the main photographer and Jeremy was my assistant. It was hot and bright. It was a challenge at first. Luckily, Jeremy had brought his strobes and helped make the shoot a success. The only downside is that his strobe fell twice.
After the shoot Torren and I went to My Sisters Room for the Melissa Carter Farwell party. We arrived at 9pm and set up the media wall for pictures. Then we waited for the event to start up. I took pictures of various patrons and the drag competition that evening. It was definitely a challenge to take pictures in the dark light, however I think I managed it alright.
Skills learned this week:
This week I learned more about being flexible and adapting to change. We had to change our idea for the cover shoot and only had a week to do it. I think we were successful in what we accomplished however.
This week I had to interact with more “clients”. I had to pay more attention to presentation. How I look when I meet them and also how I interact with them over the phone.

Week 1-Here we go!
Monday, March 28th, Day 1 8hrs 30min
Today was my first day at David. I arrived at 12:45 pm and waited till around 2pm for Torren to arrive. Once Torren arrived I was able to sit in on the David weekly meeting. At the weekly meeting I meet all 6 employees that work in the office. Brian, Steve, Carson, Jesse, Travis, and of course, Torren. I was able to watch how they all discussed the layout of the magazine, what stories, ads and pictures were going in the magazine, and how to edit things or target different audiences. They also discussed upcoming issues and what to types of photo shoots they would need or in what order they should be. It was a good introduction into how the magazine process is thought out.
After the meeting was over, I meet with Torren about upcoming photo shoots for the magazine. We discussed different ideas and what would need to be done about them.
Next, we went a few doors down to ask a flower shop owner if we could use his studio space for taking some pictures on Friday. The owner is a friend of Torrens and he agreed to let us use the space. We also collaborated on some ideas for the Easter photo shoot for the magazine. Once we somewhat of an idea we left to go back to the office.
That night David sponsors an evening at Blake’s on the Park for RuPaul’s Drag Race. Torren goes every Monday and puts out magazines, takes pictures of the crowd and socializes. It is a way for the magazine to have a presence in the community. Currently, Torren has a severely twisted ankle and can’t walk around much. He gave the camera to me and I had to go around and take pictures of the crowd. After I was done with the pictures I finally went home around 9:30 pm.
Skills: I saw briefly what it would be like to proof a magazine before print.
Thursday, March 31st, 8:30-11:30pm, 3 hrs
Tonight I attended a fashion show held at the W off of 14th and Juniper. When I first arrived I waited for some other members of the David staff to arrive at the event. Brian and Chip were the two employees of David that were attending the fashion show. They showed up around 9pm and wanted to get dinner before the show, so I went and sat with them. I tried to make conversation and get to know them better.
The show was to start around 11pm. After dinner we went up stairs to the Whiskey Bar and meet the organizer for the fashion show. He showed me the catwalk for the models. Chip and I also set up the media wall at the location to take pictures of the patrons. I was to be the photographer for David Magazine that night and take all the pictures of the event. After the wall was set up, I began to recruit individuals for the wall. I then took those pictures and pictures of the models walking down the catwalk once the show began.
Once the show was over I was finished for the evening.
Friday, April 1st, 9:30-2:30pm, 10-10:15 5hrs 15 min
Today we had a photo shoot for a person being featured in David Magazine named Paul Appleman. We had to go to an apartment and take pictures of him. I was the photographer for the shoot.
We arrived at the apartment and took up all of our equipment. Meet with the client and he gave us a tour of the place. After looking around for the best location to take photos we picked out clothes. Then we got started. I used a lot of window lights for the pictures and some reflectors.
I think we were able to get some good images and also build a nice rapport with Paul.
After our shoot with Paul, we went onto the second shoot for David magazine. The magazine is trying to launch a club card and they want to start advertising it in the magazine. We ended up using a local flower studio to take the pictures in. The model is one of Torren’s models named Alexander. For this photo shoot I was also the photographer. We used window light and outside lighting for the images. The photo shoot took around an hour.
When we were done with the shoot, I went home and prepared to come back to Atlanta for the evening. I returned later to do photos in a local bar called the 3 Legged Cowboy. I had to get the camera from the office then go on to the bar. When I went to the bar I basically asked local patrons to smile for snapshots for David magazine. These images go on “seen @” pages in the weekly publication. I was in the bar for around 15 minutes.
Saturday, April 2nd, 3:00-5:30, 1hr 30 min
Leather pride is this weekend. David magazine wanted to make sure and cover the event. This afternoon there was a BBQ at the Eagle in Atlanta. I arrived with Torren at the event to take pictures of the patrons. The event was outside on the patio. I walked around taking pictures of the event during my visit. It was an interesting crowd to say the least.
Skills:
Some of the things that I learned this week were how you need to be personable in this field of work. Personality has a lot to do with marketing and promoting. There are a wide variety of people out there and they may have something you can use one day. It is good to present a good image, social personality and have confidence. People will be believe you if you believe in yourself.
Total Hours: 18hrs. 15min
My internship with David Atlanta Magazine
